Our Story
How did Rentu begin?
It all started in 2018 with one simple thought: "Why buy a drill just to hang one picture?"
Our founder, Sean, looked around and realised most of us have things collecting dust that someone else could be using. What began as "Borrowers" has evolved into Rentu, now run by Sean alongside his two brothers and partner - a family-run, community-powered rental marketplace serving the UK to help people save money, cut waste, and finally clear out that cupboard of forgotten gadgets. From that initial spark of an idea to today's growing rental platform, we've stayed true to our core belief: neighbours helping neighbours makes communities stronger and our planet healthier.
What’s our mission?
To make borrowing better. We want people to rent what they need, when they need it - without the guilt of buying things they'll use once and shove in the loft. It's better for your wallet, better for the planet, and way more fun than owning a pressure washer you only use twice a year. Rent instead of buy - that's the Rentu way.
Why we really do this
We didn't build Rentu to make money. We built it for three simple reasons: to bring communities together, to reduce waste and help save our planet, and to give people a flexible way to earn extra income from things they already own.
If we happen to make money along the way - fantastic! That just means we can expand and help even more communities. But here's the thing - if there's another app or website out there that does what we do better than us, we'd genuinely encourage people to use that one instead.
At the end of the day, Our success is measured by the positive impact we create. It's about creating a world where neighbours help neighbours, where we waste less, and where everyone has the chance to benefit from the sharing economy.
Who’s it for?
DIY enthusiasts, party planners, hobbyists, and anyone with too much gear in the garage. Whether you need to rent tools, electronics, garden equipment or party supplies, Rentu connects you with your local community across the UK. If you've got stuff lying around - or don't want to buy something you'll barely use - Rentu's for you. Smart, sustainable, community-first rental marketplace. That's the idea.
Our Growing Community
Today, Rentu is run by a dedicated family team and serves communities across the UK with everything from PlayStation 5s and Peloton bikes to lawnmowers and pizza ovens available for rent. While our platform is accessible nationwide, we're physically based in community hubs across the North West and beyond - running pop-up stalls, attending local events, and building face-to-face relationships within our home communities. Our verified users are discovering that sharing really is caring - for both their wallets and the planet.
